Indian auto stocks have taken a hit as September sales data reveals a slowdown following a record-breaking August. Companies like Bajaj Auto and Maruti Suzuki saw their share prices decline amid softer demand.
This dip comes after a period of robust growth, which had positioned the auto sector as a key indicator of India’s economic health. The latest figures suggest a cooling off, potentially impacting the industry’s sustained upward trajectory.
Indian Auto Stocks Dip as September Sales Lag Behind August's Record Highs
NEW DELHI, INDIA - Shares of major Indian auto companies experienced a downturn on Thursday, following the release of September sales data that indicated a cooling off after a record-breaking August. The softening demand has investors re-evaluating the sector's momentum.

Bajaj Auto, a leading two-wheeler manufacturer, saw its shares drop by over 8% after reporting a significant 12% year-on-year decrease in domestic sales for September. This sharp decline contrasts with the robust performance seen in the preceding month.
Mahindra & Mahindra also faced pressure, with its shares falling more than 3% before a slight recovery. While the company sold 64,092 passenger cars in September, a 14% increase from the previous year, this growth rate is considerably lower than the 50% surge recorded in August.
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car seller, experienced a decline of over 2% in its stock price. The company is set to release its September sales figures later today, which will provide further insight into the sector's performance.
The Indian automotive industry has been a bright spot in the country's economic landscape for nearly a year, with sales figures often cited as a key indicator of sustained economic growth, particularly amidst global geopolitical uncertainties. In August, passenger vehicle sales had surged by 36.5% year-on-year to 439,309 units, while two-wheeler sales increased by 10.5% to over 2 million units, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, had previously expressed optimism about the September quarter, anticipating healthy sales driven by festive demand. However, the early sales reports from manufacturers suggest a moderation in growth for the month of September.
