The rapid advancement and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ushering in a transformative investment era, potentially rendering the traditional 60/40 stock and bond portfolio less effective, according to a top BlackRock executive. Fabio Osta, managing director and head of the alternatives specialists team, EMEA wealth at BlackRock, highlighted this 'once-in-a-lifetime' shift, emphasizing the increasing accessibility, holistic nature, and transparency of private markets for high-net-worth and institutional investors.
Amidst persistent supply shocks, inflation, and bond market volatility, the classic 60/40 allocation is facing unprecedented pressure. Consequently, alternative investments, particularly private markets, are gaining significant traction. Osta, speaking at the IPEM Global conference in Paris, noted a robust appetite for these markets among both institutional players and wealthy individuals.
"We are entering a new continuum for blending public [and] private markets," Osta told CNBC. He projects that global alternative assets under management will surge from $20 trillion to $30 trillion by 2030, driven by demand from both institutional and wealth management clients. This growth signals a departure from conventional investment strategies.
For wealth clients, Osta now recommends a more diversified allocation of 50% equities, 30% bonds, and 20% private markets. The AI buildout itself is seen as a pivotal opportunity within private markets, evolving from a niche theme to a macro trend with cross-regional, sectoral, and asset-class implications.
BlackRock views the AI revolution through three distinct phases: the current 'early innings' of scaled innovation, followed by adoption, and then transformation over the next decade. Osta cited Mistral's recent €3 billion funding round, in which BlackRock participated, as a prime example of the synergy between AI and private market investment opportunities.
Beyond AI, Osta identified the energy transition, demographic shifts, and urbanization as other significant 'mega trends' shaping the private markets landscape. He stressed the importance of selectivity within this expanding opportunity set.
