South Korea's booming AI stock market is having a ripple effect across the nation, dramatically reshaping everything from romantic pursuits and entertainment to the academic aspirations of its youth.
Traditionally, professions like doctors, lawyers, and judges were the most coveted partners in South Korea's dating scene. However, the current AI-driven economic surge has dramatically shifted these preferences. Now, individuals working in the lucrative semiconductor sector, particularly at giants like SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, are increasingly seen as prime catches, largely due to substantial bonus payouts.
A representative from Korean matchmaking firm Gayeon noted, "Recently, we've seen increased preference for people working in semiconductor companies such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, as well as AI-related occupations." This shift is underscored by the remarkable performance of these companies; both Samsung and SK Hynix have joined the trillion-dollar market club this year, with their stock prices soaring approximately 95% and 135%, respectively.
The allure of these chip sector jobs is amplified by significant financial incentives. Last year, SK Hynix distributed roughly 700 million won (over half a million dollars) per employee, a sum that surpasses 15 times the average Korean annual salary. While Samsung's bonuses for its memory chip division employees might be slightly less, they still offer a substantial financial advantage.
This emphasis on financial stability is intertwined with a growing perception among Korean singles that marriage can be a strategic financial move. The Korean media has even coined the term "wedding leverage" to describe the practice of combining incomes to accelerate home down payments or investment portfolio growth. Consequently, those in the high-demand semiconductor industry are becoming more discerning in their choices, with financial status no longer being the sole deciding factor in a partner.
The spokesperson from Gayeon added, "Our clients who work in semiconductor-related jobs are now also showing a tendency to look at a wider range of factors in a potential partner, not just occupation or finances."
AI's Influence on Entertainment and Education
The surge in popularity of semiconductor companies has even inspired new forms of entertainment. A YouTube dating show on the channel Teo, which pairs employees from Samsung and SK Hynix, premiered on August 13th and has already garnered around 650,000 views. A representative from Teo explained the show's intent: "The content was intended to focus on the hectic daily lives of office workers, using dating, a relatable topic, to offer familiarity and fun." The show's timely release, coinciding with the AI-driven boom in these companies, helped it resonate with a wide audience.
Adding to the AI-themed entertainment landscape, Netflix released a variety show last month titled "Rookie Kim's Stock Market Mission." The program follows a popular comedian's foray into stock trading, beginning with an investment in SK Hynix shares, a move that has struck a chord with the significant number of Korean retail investors, who constitute a quarter of the population.
The fervor surrounding AI is also profoundly impacting higher education, a critical stage in South Korean society. At Seoul National University, often referred to as the "Harvard of Korea," electrical and computer engineering programs have seen a dramatic increase in enrollment. This surge is directly linked to the perceived career opportunities in AI-related fields.
Data from the university reveals a striking trend: this year, nine out of ten undeclared-major students in the College of Engineering opted for electrical and computer engineering, a significant jump from just two out of ten in 2023. Lee Ji-eun, an analyst at Korea's Mirae Asset Management, commented, "Korean students aren't simply chasing 'AI' as an abstract theme — they're chasing a specific, visible, domestic pipeline into hardware divisions like Samsung's and SK Hynix's." She further noted that these positions offer "clearer and more immediate rewards" in the form of stable employment at major corporations compared to other career paths.
