Hawaii's Big Island is bracing for a potential direct hit from Hurricane Lala, a Category 1 storm that has rapidly intensified in the Pacific Ocean. The hurricane is bringing dangerous winds, heavy rainfall, and significant surf to the region, prompting Governor Josh Green to declare a state of emergency.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Lala's maximum sustained winds have reached 75 mph (120 kph), with its eyewall anticipated to move over or near the island's southern tip by Saturday evening. Forecasters warn of rainfall rates of up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) per hour, with higher elevations on the island, including the Mauna Kea volcano, potentially receiving up to 25 inches (63.5 centimeters) of rain. This significant rainfall raises concerns about life-threatening mudslides in mountainous areas where some residents live in off-grid housing.
Governor Green urged residents to "be sheltering in place now," describing the storm as "enormous" and capable of causing destructive flooding and wildfires, exacerbated by strong winds. Power outages have already affected nearly 20% of customers on the Big Island, according to poweroutage.us.
Residents Prepare for the Worst
Lifelong residents are preparing for the storm's impact. Bobby Camara, 75, plans to "hunker down" at a care home near Hilo, noting that gas stations have been busy with people stocking up on fuel for generators and vehicles. "I think stocking up is part of life over here. ... You learn to be self-reliant," Camara stated.
Mike Caputo, a fire captain living in Keaau, has his power generator ready and a large water tank full. His primary concerns are flash flooding and fallen trees, particularly the brittle albizia trees known for their rapid growth and potential to block roads.
Warnings Issued Across the Islands
A hurricane warning remains in effect for the Big Island, while tropical storm warnings have been issued for Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Ni'ihau. The last significant hurricane to make a direct hit on the Big Island was in 1871, a Category 3 storm.
Shelters have been opened, events canceled, and ranchers advised to secure their livestock. Vanessa Almanza, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu, emphasized that "It doesn't take landfall to create destruction." Residents in Waimea reported significant gusts rattling their homes and causing unexpected leaks.
The hurricane center forecasts 8 to 12 inches (20.3 to 30.5 centimeters) of rain for Maui and the Big Island's lower elevations, with 4 to 6 inches (10.2 to 15.2 centimeters) across the rest of the island chain. Many residents are still recovering from devastating floods in March.
Elevated Wildfire Risks Amidst Windy Conditions
Almanza also highlighted the increased risk of wildfires due to dry and breezy conditions outside the storm's core. This concern is particularly acute following the devastating Lahaina fire in 2023, which occurred during extreme winds as a hurricane passed to the south. Archie Kalepa of Lahaina noted a heightened general awareness of weather phenomena and environmental conditions since the fire.
Recalling Hurricane Iniki, a Category 4 storm that struck Kauai in 1992 during an El Niño year, Steven Businger, a University of Hawaii scientist, pointed out the unpredictability of storm paths. Hurricane Iniki caused $3 billion in damage and resulted in six fatalities. El Niño years are known to increase Pacific hurricane activity and influence global weather patterns.
