Mizuho has released its highly anticipated list of top stock picks for August, with retail giant Walmart and health lifestyle powerhouse Life Time Group Holdings making fresh appearances. This month's selections arrive as the stock market kicked off August with a strong showing, seeing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 achieve record highs, buoyed by robust earnings reports and growing optimism surrounding a potential deal to open the Strait of Hormuz.
The Mizuho Top Picks List is a curated collection of stocks most favored by the firm's U.S. analysts. It undergoes a monthly refresh, allowing each analyst to pinpoint their top selections based on a forward-looking 12-month outlook. While Life Time Group Holdings and Walmart were key new additions, previous picks Chewy and MGM Resorts International were removed from the roster. Below, we delve into a few of the eight companies currently on Mizuho's esteemed list:
Costco
Analyst David Bellinger remains steadfast in his conviction for Costco, actively countering prevailing concerns about a deceleration in membership growth. Bellinger argues that new warehouse openings often 'cannibalize' members from existing, older stores, thereby temporarily impacting growth figures. He also highlights accelerating 'trade-up' activity to premium memberships and exceptionally high domestic renewal rates.
"We still field concerns around membership growth slowing, as part of some underlying change within the model," Bellinger stated. "We push back with: 1) A proprietary store-level analysis indicating roughly half of recent U.S. warehouse openings are 'fill-ins,' siphoning demand from high-volume locations and therefore temporarily weighing on membership growth; 2) Trade-up activity is accelerating with Q1 premium member adds 2-3x that of total membership; 3) Domestic renewal rates remain exceptionally high at > 90% and above the 10-year running average."
Robinhood
Despite the retail trading app Robinhood experiencing a nearly 18% decline in its stock price this year, analyst Dan Dolev expresses strong optimism regarding the company's trajectory toward profitable growth. Dolev emphasizes Robinhood's unique appeal to a new generation of investors.
"HOOD has captured the zeitgeist of a generation through its high-quality platform, engaged user base, rapid product velocity, high operating leverage, and focus on profitable growth," Dolev wrote. He further noted that "Management has proven its ability to drive profitable growth while adding incremental products, services, and geographies — a key differentiator vs incumbent platforms."
Oracle
Analyst Siti Panigrahi sees immense long-term potential for Oracle, even as its shares have dipped 26% year-to-date. While investors scrutinize Oracle's significant investments in artificial intelligence, Panigrahi firmly believes the Austin-based tech behemoth is strategically positioned to reap substantial benefits from AI adoption in the years to come.
"Oracle's end-to-end AI stack across database, infrastructure, and applications positions it as a key long-term beneficiary of AI adoption," Panigrahi explained. He projects that "top-line growth fueled by AI to drive 34% operating income CAGR through FY30, a major step up from the 3% CAGR delivered between FY2010 and FY2020."
