Singapore - The fragile peace between the United States and Iran has been shattered once again, with both nations exchanging fire in the critical Strait of Hormuz, leaving the global oil market and ongoing ceasefire negotiations in peril. Each side has accused the other of initiating the hostile encounter, raising the specter of further escalation in an already volatile region.
Despite the renewed hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran remains in effect. However, he also stated that U.S. forces had "completely destroyed" the Iranian elements involved in the exchange. Iran, on the other hand, claims that U.S. forces targeted an Iranian tanker near the strait.

The disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy supplies, comes as Shell CEO Wael Sawan warns of a potential 1 billion-barrel oil shortage. This deficit is expected to grow with each day the conflict persists, inevitably impacting global energy prices and availability.
In response to the geopolitical tensions, oil prices experienced a dip before recovering in early Friday trading. International benchmark Brent crude futures rose 2.29% to $102.35 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures climbed 2.09% to $96.79 per barrel.
Beyond oil, precious metals are also attracting attention. Analysts suggest that the recent rallies in gold and silver, which had previously cooled, could regain momentum if a peace settlement between the U.S. and Iran is achieved.
Stock markets showed signs of pullback, with the S&P 500 declining on Thursday. Major companies like Amazon, Broadcom, and Micron Technology saw losses, contributing to the broader market downturn. Adding to the market's woes, Cloudflare's shares plummeted by 18% following an announcement of significant layoffs, with the company citing the impact of agentic artificial intelligence on its future workforce needs.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has been likened to a bar fight, where the initial aggressor is lost in the chaos, but the financial markets are left to bear the cost of the ensuing damage. The uncertainty surrounding the conflict underscores the delicate balance of global affairs and its immediate impact on economic stability.
