OpenAI is experiencing a wave of executive departures, the latest being James Dyett, a senior sales leader, who announced his departure on Monday. Dyett, who joined the AI giant in 2023 during a period of rapid growth following the launch of ChatGPT, is moving to Thrive Capital as an Operator in Residence.
Dyett's role encompassed leading enterprise and API sales during his tenure at OpenAI, which is now valued at over $850 billion. He expressed a desire to return to the early stages of company building, stating OpenAI is in a strong position. His departure follows similar moves by Fidji Simo (medical leave), Kate Rouch (stepping down for cancer recovery), Brad Lightcap (transitioning to special projects), Bill Peebles, and Kevin Weil.
Thrive Capital, a long-term OpenAI backer with close ties to CEO Sam Altman through founder Joshua Kushner, will be Dyett’s new home. He stated his excitement to support founders within Thrive’s portfolio and remain involved in the building process.
