Israel has approved a major deal worth tens of billions of dollars to acquire F-35 and F-15IA fighter jets from Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
This acquisition is part of a larger, long-term plan to enhance Israel’s military capabilities and maintain air superiority in the face of regional threats.
Israel has finalized a monumental defense acquisition, approving a plan to purchase two advanced combat squadrons of F-35 and F-15IA fighter jets from aerospace giants Lockheed Martin and Boeing. This significant deal, valued in the tens of billions of dollars, is a critical component of Israel's long-term military enhancement strategy, aiming to fortify the nation's air superiority amidst escalating regional tensions.
The acquisition, greenlit by Israel's Ministerial Committee on Procurement, is the initial phase of a broader 350 billion shekel ($119 billion) initiative designed to bolster the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and prepare for a challenging decade ahead. Ministry officials emphasized that these new squadrons will be central to the military's future force development, directly addressing regional threats and ensuring Israel's strategic advantage in the skies.
Amir Baram, director general of the defense ministry, highlighted the imperative to secure the IDF's military edge not just for immediate needs but for the long term. He noted that recent conflicts, including the confrontation with Iran, have underscored the vital importance of the U.S.-Israel strategic alliance and the indispensable role of advanced air power.
The approved plan includes acquiring a fourth F-35 squadron from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA fighter jets from Boeing. This follows a previous $8.6 billion contract awarded to Boeing in December for 25 new F-15IAs, with an option for an additional 25.
Baram indicated that the next crucial step involves finalizing the agreements with U.S. government and military counterparts. Defense Minister Israel Katz remarked that the recent conflict validated the air force's potency and its pivotal role in national security. He stressed the need to continue force buildup to maintain air superiority for decades to come.
Katz further elaborated that the integration of autonomous flight capabilities and next-generation defense systems in these new aircraft will represent a significant technological leap, reinforcing Israel's military dominance. "Our mission is clear: to ensure the IDF has the tools, capabilities, and strength to operate anywhere, at any time," Katz stated, reaffirming Israel's commitment to continuous investment in military strength to ensure its security.
